William Carey Sr.

William J. Carey Sr., 76, a resident of the Miners Mills section, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Mr. Carey was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late John P. and Florence (Gregor) Carey, and attended Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. He had served more than 20 years in the Navy and participated in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He had been stationed in several bases throughout the world and had retired in 1970 as an aviation ordnance chief. During his career, he had seen service in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and had worked on blimps in his early days and aircraft carriers before his retirement. He was later a security manager with Prudential Life Insurance Co., Jacksonville, Fla.

He had attended Blessed Sacrament Church, Wilkes-Barre, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Chief Petty Officers. He and his wife, the former Phyllis Gartley, had been married for 54 years. He was preceded in death by a brother John F. “Jack” Carey.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and their wives: William J. Carey Jr. and Linda Carey, Melbourne, Fla.; Philip P. Carey and Laurie Carey, Bel Air, Md.; daughter and husband Mrs. Sandra Kuehl and Thom Kuehl, Valparaiso, Ind.; sisters Mrs. Claire Meehan and Mrs. Joan Cunningham, both of Parsons section, Wilkes-Barre; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral was held from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
