Rebecca Birnbaum

Rebecca (Betty) Birnbaum, 93, formerly of Kingston, passed away peacefully, Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, in the Jewish Home, Scranton.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Yukovitz) Goldwein. She graduated from Brooklyn schools and was a member of Temple Israel Synagogue, Congregation Ohav Zedek, the Jewish Community Center, all of Wilkes-Barre, Temple B’nai B’rith, Kingston, and other religious and civic organizations.

Mrs. Birnbaum was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul; infant daughter, Linda; and brother, Jerry Goldwein.

Surviving are her sons, Ronald and his wife, Lynne, Philadelphia; Ross and his wife, Karen, Yardley; Bruce, Kingston; daughter, Carolyn Gaudine, North Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren, Marci Caplan, Robbie Birnbaum, Jared Birnbaum and Steven Birnbaum; three great-grandchildren, Noah Caplan, Mollie Caplan, Ahron Caplan; brother, Irwin Goldwein, Florida; dear friend and caregiver, Marcella Yermal, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2006, in the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Larry Kaplan and Cantor Ahron Abraham officiating. Interment will be in Temple Israel Cemetery, Swoyersville.

Shiva will be observed at the home of her son, Bruce, at 570 N. Gates Ave., Kingston, today 7-9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contribution, if desired, may be made to UHI, Paul Birnbaum Scholarship Fund, The Jewish Home of Northeastern PA, Scranton, or Compassionate Care Hospice, Scranton.
