Brandon Kelly, the nation’s top ranked Division III wrestler at 197 pounds, claimed an individual title and helped lead Wilkes to the team title at Saturday’s Rochester Institute of Technology Tournament in New York.
The No. 17 Colonels had 10 wrestlers place in the top four of their respective weight classes on their way to amassing 138.5 points.
Kelly won all four of his matches to claim the 197-pound crown.
Felipe Queiroz and Shaun Farnham placed third and fourth at 125 pounds. Josh Pauling won his first two matches at 133 pounds and finished third.
At 141 pounds Adam Penberthy posted a fifth-place finish for Wilkes, while Erik Smith earned third-place honors at 149 pounds.
Frank Heffernan advanced to the championship match at 157 pounds and finished second. At 165 pounds Justin Barowski claimed third place.
Josh Ballan finished fourth for the Colonels at 184 pounds.
Delaware Valley raced out to a 16-point halftime lead and then held off several surges by Wilkes in the second half to earn a Freedom Conference win.
Jeremy Kable had 19 points and a pair of assists for Wilkes (2-1, 1-1). Tom Kresge contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, while Steve Kline finished the day with a double-double after popping in 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. He was also credited with five assists and three blocked shots.
Isaiah Pinckney had a game-high 27 points to go along with six assists to lead the Aggies.
The Aggies used a run early in each half to pull away for a conference win over Wilkes.
Wilkes (3-2, 1-1) was led by Katie Cappelloni’s 17 points and six rebounds. Karyn Perestam had 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
Delaware Valley would put any hopes for a Wilkes comeback to rest by scoring the first 11 points of the second half.
