The Volunteer Action Center is a division of the United Way of Wyoming Valley that serves as a community resource in matching the skills and interests of volunteers with the needs of non-profit agencies. These volunteer opportunities for individuals ages 18 and older are published weekly in the Times Leader. Family Service Association, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: Guardianship Volunteer -- to provide direct contact necessary to monitor client’s physical, emotional and mental well-being. Will act as liaison between client in nursing home and Family Service Association.

Hours: Weekday, weekends and evenings -- minimum of one hour -- when volunteer is available.

Requirements: Training sessions are provided along with continuous support and encouragement, Includes on the job and site training.

More volunteers needed: Work in the Parent-Child Home Program -- a home visitation, reading readiness program for 2-year-olds.

Hours: Weekdays, weekends, and evenings -- flexible.

Requirements: Must have access to reliable car and be able to obtain criminal and child abuse clearances. Must enjoy playing with and reading to children. Sixteen hours of training required.

Family Care Consortium, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: Assist staff with recreational activities for the three residents.

Hours: Weekends, 4 to 5 hours.

Requirements: Must have a criminal clearance and report of most recent physical. We will pay for criminal clearance.

Forty Fort Shade Tree Commission, Forty Fort

Volunteers: Help is needed to remove Crown Vetch from around the trees and day lilies planted on the Cross Valley Expressway.

Hours: At the volunteers convenience.

Requirements: No special training, just the ability to use a shovel to loosen the weeds and Crown Vetch.

Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: Cashier, customer service and stocking shelves (no heavy lifting) in the Hospitality Shoppe.

Hours: Seven days a week, various hours. Free parking provided.

Requirements: Orientation provided.

More volunteers needed: Escorts -- wheelchair transport.

Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More volunteers needed: Greeters, delivery of mail and flowers and assist staff in Human Resources.

Hours: Various.

Requirements: Orientation provided.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteer: Assist customers in Gift Shoppe.

Hours: Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evenings 5 to 8 p.m.

Requirements: Training provided.

More volunteers needed: Emergency Department.

Hours: Weekdays and weekends 1 1 a.m. to 1 1 p.m.

Requirements: Training provided

Girl Scouts of Penn’s Wood Council, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: Provide leadership for Girl Scout Troops that are forming in Wilkes-Barre and surrounding areas.

More volunteers needed: Communications, fund development and cookie sales assistance needed.

Hours: Hours vary according to program.

Requirements: Volunteer training held several times a year. Conversational Spanish a help. Orientation provided.

Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind

Volunteers: Assist with vision screening at local preschools and elementary schools in our area.

Hours: Various days, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Requirements: Must enjoy working with small children and parents.

Greater Pittston YMCA

Volunteers: General monitoring of facility use and night cleaning duties.

Hours: Monday through Friday 6 to 9 p.m.

Requirements: Criminal/child abuse background check -- CPR/first aid certification.

Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice, Pittston

Volunteers: Clerical assistance needed in Pittston office.

More volunteers needed: Hospice family support. Visit hospice patients and help caregivers in their homes, personal care homes or nursing centers.

Hours: Weekdays, various hours. Office hours 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Requirements: Training provided.

Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre

Volunteers: Assist in transporting residents to activities on and off campus.

Hours: Various.

Requirements: Training provided.

More volunteers needed: Coffee hostess – serve coffee, donuts and read newspaper to residents.

Hours: Saturday and Sunday 9:30 to 1 1:30 a.m.

More volunteers needed: Play cards, chess, checkers with small groups.

Hours: Various.

More volunteers needed: Assist staff with various activities such as crafts, exercise and socials.

Requirements: Training provided.
