Robert C. Grey Sr.

Robert C. Grey Sr., 86, of Monroe Estates, formerly of Spring Garden Avenue, Berwick, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at Berwick Hospital Center, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born on August 2, 1921, in Berwick, he was a son of the late George Richard Grey Sr. and Lena Allison (Gensel) Grey.

Robert was widowed on February 24, 2001, from his wife of nearly 45 years, Gene (Weiss) Grey.

Mr. Grey graduated tenth grade at the former Centre Township High School in 1937. He later graduated from Berwick High School as a member of the class of 1939.

Robert was in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations as secretary to General John R. Hodge.

From 1939 until 1964 he was employed by the A.C.& F. He then worked for Bercon Packaging from 1964 until his retirement in 1986.

He was an active member of the Berwick Christian Church where he had served as an elder, deacon, bible school superintendent, financial secretary and a member of the Chancel Choir.

He belonged to Knapp Lodge 462 F&AM, Berwick; was a 50-plus year member of the Royal Arch Chapter 314; Mt. Moriah Council, Bloomsburg; Crusade Commandery 12, Bloomsburg; Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg; and the Missouri Lodge of Research.

Along with his parents and his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his siblings Bertelle Maxine Grey, George R. Grey Jr. and Jeanne L. (Grey) Marshall.

Mr. Grey is survived by his son Robert C. Grey Jr. and his wife, Bette, of Berwick; grandsons David Grey, of Elizabethtown and Jeffrey Grey, of Berwick; numerous nieces and nephews.

His greatest joy was being Pop-Pop to his two grandsons.

Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Berwick Christian Church, 701 E. 5th St., Berwick. Friends will be received Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick. A Masonic Service will be held Friday evening during the visitation hours at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held Saturday from noon until time of service at the church. Pastor John Hill will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Berwick Christian Church, 701 E. 5th St., Berwick, PA 18603, or to the Columbia County Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, 310 E. 3rd St., P.O. Box N, Mifflinville, PA 18631.
