Stanley J. Sweeney, 85, formerly of West Main Street, Glen Lyon, passed away, Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at the Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke.
Born in the Lee section of Newport Township, on March 6, 1922, he was a son of the late John and Sophia Kasa Sweeney. He attended the Newport Township schools.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre from October 1942 to April 1946, attaining the rank of corporal.
He was employed by the Susquehanna Coal Company, until his retirement.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish/St. Adalbert’s Church and the American Legion Post 539, both of Glen Lyon.
During his earlier years, he was a woodsman and enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humor and his many jokes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Stephania Rasmus; sister Julia Sklanney; brothers William, Joseph and Andrew Sweeney.
He is survived by his daughter Sophia Sager and her husband, Russ, of Glen Lyon; grandchildren Darren (Bruce) and Renee Sager; sister-in-law Helen Sweeney; several nieces and nephews, including Romaine Butka and Jane Mikolinis.
Military funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Corpus Christi Parish/St. Adalbert’s Church. Interment will follow in St. Adalbert’s Cemetery, Glen Lyon. Family and friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m.
Stanley’s family would like to commend and thank the staff at both the Birchwood Nursing Center and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center for their care and compassion throughout Stanley’s time there.
