The Rev. Joe Greskiewicz blesses Easter baskets Saturday at St. Joseph’s Church in Plains Township. Church parishioners make their own baskets filling them with ham, eggs, butter, cheeses, kielbasa and any other foods that will be eaten on Easter before bringing them to the church for the annual blessing. After families take their baskets home and prepare the Easter meal, the family gathers around to bless the food once more before eating. Greskiewicz said the blessing of the baskets is a 100-year-old tradition of blessing the ‘first foods of Easter.’ Christians around the world celebrate Easter as the most holy day of the year. To millions, it is the day Jesus rose from the dead.
