Wine, dine and help homeless women

A nonprofit women’s organization committed to improving the welfare of women and children is pledging its support to the only emergency women’s shelter serving Luzerne and Schuylkill counties.

But in order for the Junior League of Wilkes-Barre to provide a monetary donation to Ruth’s Place, it needs help from the public.

The Junior League is hosting its fourth annual Wine and Dine at the Courthouse fundraiser April 27 at the Luzerne County Courthouse. The volunteer organization will donate the proceeds to Ruth’s Place, which operates out of the First United Methodist Church on North Franklin Street.

“We selected Ruth’s Place because we feel it is a big need for this community,” Junior League President Jo-Anne Moss said. “Women face personal struggles, abuse of all sorts and family breakdowns, leaving them homeless and destitute. We keep at the forefront of our minds these women are someone’s daughter, sister, mother and even someone’s grandmother.”

Ruth’s Place director, the Rev. Keith Benjamin, said he and his wife, Julie, shelter coordinator, welcome any help and are excited about the group’s support.

“Monetary donations are a key to paying bills to keep the heat on, the electricity, the water on,” Benjamin said.

The shelter, in its fourth year of operations, is looking to develop additional programs to assist homeless women.

“We are trying to cut down the amount of time people spend in the shelter,” Benjamin said, noting much of the problem the area is experiencing could have been avoided if preventive measures were in place to help women not become homeless.

Ruth’s Place is not just in need of financial support but needs a constant supply of food, clothing, pillows and toiletries.

In December, the Junior League hosted a holiday party at Ruth’s Place, and provided a meal and gave women staying at the shelter backpacks filled with bath towels, washcloths, slipper socks, toiletries and a $25 gift card to Boscov’s.
