LAFLIN – The Laflin Police Department will have an officer on duty at the station today, from 6 to 9 p.m., to address concerns and answer questions from citizens.

HAZLE TWP. -- Route 940 in Hazle Township will remain closed until further notice from the intersection of Sandy Valley Road/Crescent Road to the intersection of Brickyard Road/Pond Creek Road in Foster Township because of a mine subsidence earlier this month.

A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation official said the road could be closed until early June as work begins to fill the void under the road.

PennDOT recommends truckers use Route 3022 (Butler Drive) to Route 309 to avoid a weight-posted bridge on state Route 2051. Personal vehicles can use other detours.

NANTICOKE -- Luzerne County Community College will hold a dedication ceremony for the Regional Public Safety Training Center at LCCC on Friday at 1 p.m., at the training center on Prospect Street.

The ceremony, being held in cooperation with the college’s 40th anniversary celebration, is open to the public.

Phase 1 of the LCCC Regional Public Safety Training Center consists of a tactical/structural firefighting tower/burn building and headquarters. The tactical tower/burn building is a five-story building designed and constructed to withstand live fire training drills.

Headquarters includes two classrooms, temporary administrative offices, an apparatus bay, equipment storage and a maintenance shop.

Scheduled speakers for the dedication ceremony include: county Commissioner and LCCC Board Member Gregory A. Skrepenak; LCCC President Thomas P. Leary; state Rep. John Yudichak, D-Nanticoke; Kingston Deputy Fire Chief James R. Wills Jr., president of the Luzerne County Fire and Rescue Training Association; Jim Ellis, an LCCC student; and Dr. Karen A. Flannery, LCCC dean of public safety training and special initiatives.

Tours will be held after the dedication ceremony. Due to a delivery delay, demonstrations in the tactical tower/burn building will not take place at the dedication ceremony. Tours will be available at a later date.
