DEA charges 3 truckers in federal marijuana trafficking case

SCRANTON – Three people face federal charges for involvement in an international marijuana trafficking organization that was responsible for distributing more than 220 pounds of pot in West Hazleton, according to court papers.

Harris Mekic, 33, Damir Javoravac, 34, and Sanel Fakik, 34, were charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute the marijuana, according to a criminal affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Scranton.

They are being held at Lackawanna County Prison, according to booking records.

Addresses were not provided in the affidavit.

According to the court papers, William Davis, a special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration, received information Wednesday from DEA agents in another district that the three suspects would be meeting in West Hazleton to exchange a large amount of marijuana.

Javoravac, a truck driver, was to meet with another truck driver, Harris Mekic, according to the affidavit. Another person involved would be traveling with Javoravac.

DEA agents saw two trucks meeting at a secluded location in West Hazleton at about 9:25 p.m., court papers said. The people in the trucks were later identified as Mekic, Javoravac and Fakik, and they met for more than an hour.

According to the complaint, agents observed work being done in the fuel tanks of the trucks and were able to see the suspects passing back and forth between the two trucks. They were stopped as they were trying to leave the scene.

A search revealed each truck had a secret compartment in one of its fuel tanks, according to the affidavit. The compartment in the truck occupied by Javoravac and Fakik was found to have more than 100 pounds of suspected marijuana that allegedly had been transferred from the other truck.

The affidavit did not say where specifically in West Hazleton the alleged transaction occurred.
