Shavertown youth attends conference

Wyoming Seminary sophomore Omeed Firouzi, of Shavertown, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference held in Washington, D.C.

The six-day conference is designed for high-achieving high school sophomores, juniors and seniors and allows them to develop a greater understanding of the citizen’s role in a democracy and the responsibilities of leadership.

At the conference, Firouzi attended leadership group meetings to discuss leadership traits and the workings of the federal government. He also took part in Model Supreme Court and Model Congress activities, toured the floor of the House of Representatives, visited with some staff members of senators and representatives from Pennsylvania, and toured several national monuments.

Son of local graduates from basic training

Army National Guard Pvt. Sean M. Haines has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat and field maneuvers and tactics.

He is the son of Michael Haines of Rural Route 1, Noxen and a 2008 graduate of Greater Nanticoke Area High School.
