Cougars stave off Pittston Area

YATESVILLE — Dan Maguschak scored 22 points and Adam Davis added 17 – on five three-pointers and two free throws – as Hazleton Area held off Pittston Area 65-64 on Thursday in a Wyoming Valley Conference boys basketball game.

Five players reached double figures for the Patriots, who were led by Bernie Moska’s 15 points and 14 more from Matt Zera.

Paris Cleveland added 16 points for the Cougars.

Kenneth Wiggins had 12 points for Pittston Area, while Dan Irvin and Carl Stravinski followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

After a rough first quarter that saw Tunkhannock take a 15-3 lead, Bernard Edmonds took over for the Warriors, scoring 33 of his team’s 52 points in a road win. Chris Murphy chipped in 13 points.

Ryan McCarthy was one of three Tigers in double figures, hitting four three-pointers and finishing with 17 points.

Jack Crossin had a huge night, pouring in 32 points on 14 field goals and going 2-for-2 from the foul line to lead the Spartans, who erupted for 42 points in the second half after only leading 21-15 at halftime.

Cody Arner led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Brandon Cope chipped in 10.

Ali Muhammed added 12 points for Valley West.
