HANOVER TWP.: The commander of the eastern region of AMVETS will host the region’s spring meeting Sunday at AMVETS Post 59 at 578 Fellows Ave. Commander Gabe Metric will call the meeting to order at 1 p.m. All members are urged to participate. AMVETS posts from Philadelphia to Towanda are expected to attend.

Care provided by the Veterans Administration, AMVETS legislative issues, the state convention in Bethlehem, upcoming elections and more will be discussed. State first vice commander Gerard Gurnari will provide an update on national membership and support for his candidacy for the office of AMVETS state commander.

The region’s picnic committee will meet at noon to discuss the summer picnic scheduled at St. Clair Fish and Game in July.

The region’s AMVETS ladies auxiliaries will also meet at the times listed.

HAZLETON: Ruth Gonzalez from the Governor’s Veterans Outreach and Assistance Center will be at the Hazleton Career Link, 75 N. Laurel St., from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday to help veterans, their spouses and family members with VA benefits and services. She can help veterans file a claim or apply for medical benefits through the VA medical care system. Assistance can also be provided with pension, prescriptions, records, education, burial, medals, nursing care, or post traumatic stress disorder and Agent Orange issues related to Vietnam service.

All veterans who served during peace or war are asked to bring a copy of Form DD-2 14.

KINGSTON: The Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 395 will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Post home. All members are urged to attend.

PLAINS TWP.: Approximately 79 children attended a Christmas party and visit from Santa, aka Jimmy Emil, sponsored by LANI Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6325 at the post home at 35-37 Cleveland St., Hudson.

Gifts, food and refreshments were provided.

PLYMOUTH: District 12 Sons of the American Legion will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth American Legion Post 463. All squadrons are urged to have representation.

All March fundraising calendars for the SAL must be turned in by this meeting.

WILKES-BARRE: The Italian American Veterans Association of Luzerne County Post 1 will meet March 5 at St. Mary’s Antiochian Orthodox Church Hall, at 905 S. Main St. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. followed by the business session.

Commander William Uggiano will preside.

Officers and board of directors will be elected for 2009-2010. Post members Navy Lt. Cmdr. Lou Ann Corrado and Navy Capt. John P. Feerick will administer the oaths of office.

Officers on the slate are Vincent E. Aleo, commander, Wilkes-Barre; Joseph DeLuca, senior vice commander, Hazleton; Thomas Debortoli, junior vice commander, Drums; William Uggiano, adjutant, Wilkes-Barre; Louis Bigiarrelli, provost officer, West Wyoming; Louis Cora, finance officer, Wilkes-Barre; and Raymond Bianconi, service officer. Board of directors are Joseph Lini, Plains Township; John Hyder, Wilkes-Barre; Anthony DeAngelo, West Wyoming; Saverio Costantino, Hanover Township; Pellegrino “Joe” Malacari, Wilkes-Barre; and Al Cibello, Wilkes-Barre.
