COLLEGE SPORTS Florida State appeals NCAA forfeits ruling

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State will appeal part of an NCAA punishment that would strip the school of victories in 10 sports, including as many as 14 in football. The university president called the penalty “excessive and inappropriate.”

Football coach Bobby Bowden has 382 career wins — one fewer than Penn State’s Joe Paterno, the major college leader. Have 14 victories subtracted from Bowden’s official total could ruin his chances of retiring as the NCAA leader.

“The coaches had no involvement,” Florida State president T.K. Wetherell said Tuesday.

Obama likes top seeds

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama’s NCAA bracket has Louisville, North Carolina, Memphis and Pittsburgh in his Final Four.

The First Hoops Fan filled out his bracket for ESPN at the White House on Tuesday, sticking primarily with No. 1 seeds. The only exception was Memphis, seeded behind Connecticut in the West regional.

NBA Tweeting lands Buck in hot water

MILWAUKEE — It might be the next big thing in online social networking, but Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles isn’t a big fan of Twitter.

At least not when one of his players is posting from the Bucks’ locker room during halftime of a critical game.

Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva got a talking-to from Skiles after the coach learned Villanueva posted a message to his Twitter feed — a “tweet” — from his mobile phone during halftime of Sunday’s home victory over Boston.

“We made a point to Charlie and the team that it’s nothing we ever want to happen again,” Skiles said after practice Tuesday. “You know, (we) don’t want to blow it out of proportion. But anything that gives the impression that we’re not serious and focused at all times is not the correct way we want to go about our business.”

Using the screen name “CV31” — Villanueva’s initials and jersey number — Villanueva posted the following message during halftime Sunday:

“In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt. We’re playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up.”
