His Eminence Angelo Cardinal Sodano, dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals and former Vatican secretary of state, will be the celebrant of a Solemn Mass of Thanksgiving at 3 p.m. on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, William Street, Pittston. Sodano’s visit to the Greater Pittston area May 29-31 is to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the presence and ministry of the Congregation of the Oblates of St. Joseph in the Diocese of Scranton. The Oblates of St. Joseph is a religious order of priests, founded by St. Joseph Marello in 1878 in Asti, Italy, that sent its first missionaries to the United States in 1929 to minister the Italian immigrants in the Pittston area. The Order staffs the parishes of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Rocco’s, Pittston; and St. Anthony of Padua Church, Exeter.
Dr. John J. Markarian will speak at 10 a.m. on May 31 at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 471 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Markarian, the founding president of Haigazian College, Beirut, Lebanon, and author of “The Thirsty Enemy,” will discuss his seven years of experience during the war in Lebanon and personal action to “loving your enemy.” For more information, contact the Rev.
