Chamber award given

On a sunny Thursday afternoon spectators watch the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce Healthy Workplace Award ceremony at the River Common park in Wilkes-Barre.

In the background are Donna Sedor, chamber executive vice president, and Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton, who accepted the award for the city. Penn Millers Insurance Wellness Program dates to 1991 with a focus on prevention and includes participation in community walks, weekly yoga classes, Take the Stairs Wednesdays, a Wellness Library table and distribution of "Eat This, Not That" book to all employees.

The city of Wilkes-Barre offers employees several programs including on-site Weight Watchers classes, free membership to the Greater Wilkes-Barre YMCA, free blood pressure screenings and free flu shots.

In its City Walking Program, each department records the steps taken by participants. Prizes are awarded to weekly winners.
