Powell defense lawyer seeking to withdraw

SCRANTON – An attorney who formerly worked in attorney Robert Powell’s law office is seeking to withdraw from defending the firm in lawsuits filed by juveniles who allege they were improperly detained in juvenile facilities once co-owned by Powell.

Stephen Seach on Thursday filed a court motion seeking permission to withdraw based on the “strained relationship” that has developed between him and the Powell Law Group.

Seach formerly worked for the Powell Law Group, but left to open his own practice on Sept. 11. Since then, business disputes have developed between him and the law firm, Seach says in the court motion. That has rendered his representation of the firm “unreasonably difficult.”

Seach filed the motion because federal law requires an attorney to seek court permission to withdraw from a suit. His motion states that the Powell Law Group does not oppose the motion and plans to hire other counsel to represent it.
