SWOYERSVILLE -- Police said they arrested a man for allegedly stealing a backhoe early Wednesday morning.
David Thomas Calabrese, 38, of Poland Street, Swoyersville, was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle, trespass by vehicle, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail.
According to the criminal complaint:
Police were investigating the theft of a John Deere backhoe owned by Pennsylvania American Water Company from a pumping station on Owen Street just after midnight Wednesday.
Police found the backhoe at the Holy Trinity Cemetery on Warsaw Street where two men ran away from the vehicle, the criminal complaint says.
Calabrese was found hiding in woods, police said.
The other man wasn’t charged.
Police said a fence around the pumping station was damaged by the backhoe.
