MMI beats Meyers for 1st program win

HAZLETON – MMI Prep rallied from a two-goal deficit at halftime to post its first win in the program’s history, a 4-3 triumph over Meyers in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division C girls soccer game Thursday.

Kristyn Lizbinski scored three goals early in the second half as the Preppers took a 3-2 lead. Meyers tied the score in the 59th minute on a goal by Kayla Verdekal, but Prep’s Alyona Kostyal scored with about nine minutes left.

MMI keeper Amanda Miller made some crucial saves to keep her team in the game.

Rebecca Lipski scored one goal and assisted three others as Wyoming Valley West gained sole possession of first place in Division B.

Kelcie Hromisin and Kaleigh Reynolds scored 23 seconds apart late in the second half to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Brianna Evans and Amanda Harris each added goals.

Brittany Cardona scored late in the game for Honesdale.

Nanticoke keeper Becca Dinelli made 14 saves and Crestwood keeper Kyley Henry made eight as their teams played to the second consecutive scoreless game in the WVC in as many days.

Crestwood outshot the Trojans 17-10 and had an 11-2 corner advantage.

Senior Julie Hubbard, a Penn State recruit, returned to action for the first time since an ACL injury her sophomore year to help the Comets to the victory.

Hubbard scored once and Emma Black added two, including the game-winner midway through the second half.

Hope Krolewski and Rachel Kuprionas scored for Redeemer. Laura Wingert assisted both scores.
