John E. ‘Marty’ Mortimer Sr.

John E. “Marty” Mortimer Sr., 66, of Laurel Run, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

He was born July 5, 1942, in Clairton, a son of the late Regina and Leo Mortimer Sr. A 1960 graduate of Clairton High School, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Air Force.

In 1973, he graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. From 1973 to 1984, he was employed by the Veterans Administration and later for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry until his retirement in 2003.

He was a member of American Legion, Post 815, Georgetown; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7918, Slocum; Catholic War Veterans, Post 274, Ashley; Polish American Veterans, Plains Township, and was a social member of the North End Slovak Citizens Club, Wilkes-Barre.

An avid golfer, he loved playing pool and was a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Kurtz.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, the former Kathryn Palumbo; sons, John Mortimer Jr., and his wife, Joanne, Pittston; Joel Mortimer and his wife, Melanie, Bear Creek Township; daughter, Dawn Labar and her husband, Marc, Wilkes-Barre; granddaughters, Jordan and Alexandria Mortimer, Pittston; brother, Leo Mortimer Jr., Carnegie; several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Wilkes-Barre.
