Bernadette A. Gillis, 93, of West Pittston, passed away at her home Saturday, May 2, 2009.
Born in Exeter, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Stanley and Mary Zdanovicz. Bernadette was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Schooley Street, Exeter ,and its Altar & Rosary Society.
She was a graduate of Exeter High School, Class of 1933, and had worked as a secretary at the former Exeter High School. Bernadette was also employed by the Edward Gilroy Insurance Agency and subsequently as head bookkeeper for Exeter Blouse.
She belonged to the Orchard Lake Society, Scranton, the Cosmopolitan Club, Exeter, and was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Exeter.
For many years, she served as a Democratic committee woman in West Pittston.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph J. Gillis, in 1985, 12 sisters and a brother.
Surviving are her daughter, Rosemary Gillis, Athens, Pa.; and a son, John Gillis, West Pittston with whom she resided; nieces and nephews; and her faithful companion, Toby.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from the Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:15 a.m. at St. Cecilia’s Church, Exeter. Interment will be in St. Casimir’s Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call today, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
