Doris M. Brown, 88, of 7295 SR 6W, Tunkhannock, formerly of Black Walnut, Pa., passed away at the Mercy Tyler Hospital, in Tunkhannock, Sunday evening, January 2, 2011, after being taken there earlier that afternoon.
She was born in Chemung, N.Y., November 8, 1922, a daughter of the late Fred and Frances Gardner Newman.
Growing up in Laceyville, Pa., she attended the Laceyville High School.
On July 15, 1939, she married Floyd M. Brown Jr., and they were married for 56 years, before he passed away on October 3, 1995.
In their earlier years, Doris and Floyd made their home on their farm in Macedonia, Bradford Co. This is where they raised their family.
They later sold the farm and moved to Mehoopany, Pa., for a time.
In 1970, they purchased their home in Black Walnut, where she lived until moving to her present residence, in Tunkhannock, 10 years ago.
For many years, Doris was employed as a seamstress at many sewing factories in the Laceyville, Black Walnut, and Meshoppen areas.
She worked and later volunteered at the Tyler Memorial Hospital, in Tunkhannock, for a total of 34 years, retiring from there at 80 years of age.
She was very active with the Lower Wyoming County Mercy Tyler Auxiliary.
Doris was a very kind, considerate, and loving lady. She made numerous friends, wherever she went.
Doris and Floyd centered their lives around their family. She loved crocheting in her spare time, making many items for everyone, including infant hats and prayer shawls for Tyler Hospital patients.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gary Brown (June 1978) and Wilbert Brown (April 1988); a great-grandson, Jobe Brown (Aug. 2000); three sons-in-law, George Smith (July 1992), David Baker (Oct. 1994), and Clarence Williams (July 2006); and two brothers, Donald Newman and Robert Sims.
Surviving are her loving children, six daughters, Mrs. Connie Williams Lippner and her husband, David, Towanda, Pa., and Lakeland Fla.; Mrs. Rebecca Smith, Dallas; Diana and Ronnie Schoonover, Black Walnut; Mrs. Laura Lee Baker, Wyalusing, Pa.; Mary Lou and Sam Smith, Meshoppen; and Karen and Max Russick, East Rush, Pa.; and her three sons, Alden and Virginia Brown, Clapper Hill, Pa.; Floyd (Tim) and Sandy Brown III, Auburn Center, Pa.; and Dennis and Linda Brown, Wyalusing; as well as 29 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Myers, of the Meshoppen Biblical Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery, Laceyville, Pa. Family and friends may call at the church Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
