Police charge man with assaulting his girlfriend

Matthew Gyle serving probation for similar assault charges on former girlfriend.

WILKES-BARRE – A man serving a probation sentence for assaulting a former girlfriend was arrested on similar charges after his current girlfriend claimed he stabbed her repeatedly with a screwdriver.

State police at Wyoming arrested Matthew Adam Gyle, 31, at his Conyngham Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, residence just before 3 a.m. Monday after Rebecca Williams alleged he terrorized her for most of Sunday.

Williams told state police that Gyle punched her in the head during an argument in a vehicle and took her to woods near White Haven, where he stabbed her several times with a screwdriver, according to the criminal complaint.

Gyle was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment. He was arraigned before District Judge Fred Pierantoni in Pittston and jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $15,000 bail.

According to the criminal complaint:

Williams told state police she was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Gyle on the Cross Valley Expressway when he punched her in the head during an argument just after midnight on Sunday. Gyle drove her to the Harveys Lake area where she attempted to jump out of his vehicle.

Gyle pulled her back into the car, punched her in the head and threatened to cut her throat with a box cutter.

Williams claimed Gyle left her at a house on Swamp Road in Lehman Township. He returned, punched her in the head a third time and drove her to woods near White Haven, where she claimed he stabbed her several times with a screwdriver while threatening to kill her, state police alleged.

Gyle drove her to his residence where she escaped when he fell asleep. She was treated at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for injuries early Monday morning, state police said.

In an unrelated case, Luzerne County President Judge Thomas Burke sentenced Gyle in May to 12 months probation for assaulting his then-girlfriend at his residence on Sept. 29, 2009, according to arrest and court records.

A preliminary hearing on the latest charges is scheduled on Jan. 12 in Wilkes-Barre Central Court.
