Two Luzerne County fire companies are receiving more than $200,000 in federal Homeland Security grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Shickshinny Volunteer Fire Company Inc. received a $142,500 grant for vehicle acquisition and the Excelsior Hose Company of Duryea received a $74,813 grant for operations and safety.
Taylor Fire Rescue in Lackawanna County also received a grant of $49,875 for operations and safety.
“Firefighters are invaluable members of our community and they work tirelessly to ensure our safety. It is critical that we do everything in our power to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to perform their jobs,” said U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Scranton. “This money will provide valuable assistance to the fire departments of Northeastern Pennsylvania.”
This money was awarded through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program to strengthen first responders’ ability to protect the health and safety of the public as well as the responders’ themselves. This is the grant program’s fifth disbursement for fiscal 2010.
