Irene Stevenson, 87, of Swoyersville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, February 1, 2011, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Her beloved husband was the late John Stevenson, who passed away on April 1, 1978.
Born on August 13, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, Irene was a daughter of the late Stephen J. and Helen (Zupa) Krakosky. Raised in Swoyersville, Irene had resided there most of her life.
Irene was a graduate of the former Swoyersville High School, class of 1941. During her high school years, Irene was the first majorette to perform both at Swoyersville High School and in the Wyoming Valley.
Prior to her retirement in January of 2009, Irene was employed for 20 years as the secretary for Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Parish Community of Swoyersville. In her earlier years, Irene was employed as a secretary for Ertley Motorworld, Wilkes-Barre.
A faithful Catholic, Irene was a member of Holy Trinity Church of Swoyersville.
Irene had many enjoyments in life, especially cooking and baking for her family and playing cards with her friends. Also, Irene always enjoyed being a guest at the many dinners and social events held at Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Parish Rectory.
Family always came first throughout Irene’s life and she cherished every moment she had with her loved ones.
Irene will forever be remembered as a caring and dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her loving family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Stephen and Helen Krakosky, and her husband, John, Irene was also preceded in death by her brothers, Albert Krakosky, John Krakosky and Kirk Krakosky; her sister Eleanor Mack; and her son-in-law, David E. Grundowski.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Carole A. Grundowski of Trucksville; her grandchildren, David Grundowski of Shavertown, Laura Grundowski of Trucksville, and Leah Grundowski of Dallas; her great-grandson, Chase Aten; her sister Anna Mae Shank, of Dallas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday from the Wroblewski Funeral Home Inc., 1442 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. in Holy Name/Saint Mary’s Church, 283 Shoemaker St., Swoyersville, with the Rev. Louis A. Grippe, her dear friend, celebrating. The funeral Mass will be con-celebrated by the Rev. William J. Karle, Msgr. John J. Sempa, and the Rev. Richard J. Cirba. Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Swoyersville. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
