Walter K. Chmiola Jr.

Walter K. Chmiola Jr., 59, of Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pa., died Monday, May 2, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Walter K. Chmiola Sr., and Anna R. (Gorczewski) Chmiola of Hanover Township, Wilkes-Barre. He was a graduate of Hanover Township High School, class of 1969.

Walter served with the First Battalion of the 109th Field Artillery, Wilkes-Barre, and Company F of the 104th Aviation Brigade at Indiantown Gap, both of the 28th Infantry Division of the Pa. Army National Guard. He joined the 28th Infantry Division Association in Harrisburg, Pa., where he had served as the Executive Director and Past President. Walter had a very strong passion for supporting our 28th Division Troops, both deployed and at home.

Walter was the hub of all activity and communications for the Division’s Veterans, displaying a conscientious and consistent vigilance for the history, lineage, and traditions of the U.S. Army’s Oldest Division and a steady and deep concern for its Soldiers, past and present. “Roll On 28th Roll On.”

Walter was employed as an Engineer for Conrail and was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Polish National Catholic Church, Nanticoke, and American Legion Post No. 272, Linglestown, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter K. Chmiola Sr.

In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Gloria (Mitchell) Chmiola, with whom he would of celebrated 35 years of marriage on May 15, 2011; daughters, Adrianne Chmiola-Wells of Harrisburg, Pa., and Amanda Eshenour and her husband, Nathan, of Hummelstown, Pa.; as well as a granddaughter, Amber.

Visitation will be held at The Keystone Conference Center at Fort Indiantown Gap, located on Lake Road, off of Route 443, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will immediately follow with CH (LTC) Douglas Etter and the Rev. Eugene Liddick officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Walter Chmiola Memorial Fund, c/o Members 1st Federal Credit Union, 15 N. Lockwillow Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17112.
