Warriors upset Lehman

Pittston Area smashes Tunkhannock, Berwick

Wyoming Area won eight of 14 bouts and picked up another 18 points in forfeits on its way to handing Lake-Lehman its first Wyoming Valley Conference Division II loss of the season in a 42-33 win on Monday night in the Back Mountain.

The Warriors posted wins in the five lightest classes and the three heaviest in taking the upset win over the Black Knights.

Wyoming Area scored three pins with Eric Filipiak, Nick Heck and Carl Zielinski all taking victories.

Filipiak won at 103 pounds with a pin of Jeff Kioske in 1:43. Heck pinned Brandon Vitack in 3:52 at 130 pounds, and Zielinski pinned Mark Bullock in 2:20 at 289 pounds.

Steve Barush (119) and Andy Schutz (125) each won decisions for Wyoming Area, and Carmen Mauriello (112), Mitchell Payne (189) and Shawn Whiting (215) all won by forfeit.

WA 36, Nanticoke 37

Wyoming Area won four of the first seven bouts but it did not hold up as Nanticoke rallied on the strength of three pinfall wins to edge the Warriors, 37-36, in a WVC Division II wrestling match.

Nick Heck pinned Joe Lacomy in 2:11 at 125 pounds in the second bout of the night before Andy Schutz won a forfeit at 130 pounds.

John Ratajcazk then pinned Maurice Wood at 2:54 of the 145-pound bout, and AJ Lemardy followed with a 6-4 decision at 152-pounds over Mike Colatosti.

The Warriors ended the match with wins by Eric Filipiak (130) and Carmen Mauriello (112) but it was too little too late.

Filipiak won a 7-6 decision over Kyle Gavrish and Mauriello pinned Joe Brady in 4:25.

PA 49, Hazleton 22

Pittston Area recorded six pins among its nine victories in a 49-22 win over Hazleton in a Wyoming Valley Conference match on Friday night at the Thomas R. Kelly Gymnasium in Yatesville.

Jamie Scarantino (103), Tyler Lutecki (112), Angelo Lussi (130), Justin Wilk (140), Dom Lussi (160) and Jason Laboranti (189) all won by pinfall in their respective bouts against the Cougars.

Mike Domarasky won a 17-2 technical fall at 119 pounds over Cameron Ivanina; Jon Skryzowski won a tough 8-7 decision over Taylor Schermerhon at 215 pounds; and Chris Wesolowski won by forfeit at 285 for the other Patriot wins.

PA 43, Berwick 22

Pittston Area won nine bouts in a 43-22 win over Berwick on Saturday in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division I match.

Tyler Lutecki led the Patriots with a pin of Josh Gregory in 1:53 of his 112-pound bout.

Jamie Scarantino (103), Dom Lussi (160) and Robert Falvo (189) won major decisions for Pittston Area in their respective weight classes, and Angelo Lussi (125), Frank Ardo (140) and Jason Laboranti (215) all won by technical fall.

Justin Wilk added a 6-0 decision at 145-pounds for the Patriots, and Brandon Dolan won a forfeit at 152.

PA 51, Tunkhannock 12

Pittston Area recorded six pins on its way to a 51-12 thrashing of Tunkhannock on Wednesday in the Thomas R. Kelly Gymnasium in Yatesville.

Jamie Scarantino was the quickest to victory with a pin of Brad Sweard in 58 seconds in the 103-pound bout.

Tyler Lutecki also took care of business quickly at 112 pounds with a pin of Jacob Sukler in 1:05, and Angelo Lussi pinned Matt Simkonis in 1:49 at 130 pounds.

Brandon Dolan (152), John Minich (160), and Bob Falvo (189) also recorded pinfall wins for the Patriots.

Pittston Area won three other bouts by decision as Michael Domarasky (125), Kevin Wesolowski (135) and Frank Ardo (145) all grabbed victories. Justin Wilk (140) added a forfeit win for the Patriots.
