Patriots off to fast start on track

Lady Patriots lose two close meets; WA rained out

The Pittston Area boys’ track team is off to a fast start with two wins this past week over Crestwood and Valley West. The Lady Patriots on the other hand performed well, but were edged out twice by the Lady Comets and Lady Spartans in dropping their first two meets.

Wyoming Area was rained out this past week and will run two meets this coming week.

BOYS

PA 94, Crestwood 56

Cody Rydzy, Ron D’Eliseo and Dave McLean each won two events to pace Pittston Area to a 94-56 victory over Crestwood on Thursday afternoon in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division I meet in Mountain Top.

Rydzy won the Triple Jump and Long Jump events for PA, and also placed third in the 110m and 300m Hurdles. The senior won the triple jump with a leap of 38’11 and the long jump with a mark of 18’4.

D’Eliseo won the 100m and 300m hurdles in times of 15.7 and 44.5, and McLean won the 1600m and 3200m long distance races with times of 4:46 and 11:12 respectively.

Brandon Hampton added a win in the 800m race, and a second-place finish in the 400m.

John Poli won the Shot Put for the Patriots with a throw of 41’6 and finished second in the Discus.

Pittston Area swept the High Jump with Tyler Roman winning with a jump of 6’2. Steve Sklanka and Sam Simons finished second and third.

Matt Erfman added a victory in the Pole Vault for PA.

PA 83, Valley West 67

Cody Rydzy won three events and the Patriots won 12 overall in a 83-67 victory over Wyoming Valley West on Tuesday in Plymouth.

Rydzy captured both the Triple and Long jumps, and also won the 110m Hurdles to lead Pittston Area. The senior won the Triple Jump in 40’2, and the Long Jump in 20’4 while taking the 110 in a time of 15.7. Rydzy also added a third place finish in the 300m Hurdles.

Dave McLean added two victories for the Patriots, winning the 1600m and 3200m distance races. The senior won the 1600 in a time of 4:43, and the 3200 in a time of 10:31.

Brandon Hampton added a win in the 800m in a time if 2:17, and finished second in the 400m.

John Poli won the Shot Put with a throw of 41’1, and finished third in the Discus.

Ron D’Eliseo won the 300m Hurdles in a time of 44.5 for PA, and finished second in the 110m Hurdles.

Matt Erfman added a win in the Pole Vault, and Tyler Roman won the High Jump for the Patriots.

GIRLS

PA 70, Crestwood 76

Rachel Scanlon and Olivia Lanza won two events each, but it was not enough as Pittston Area was outdistanced by Crestwood, 76-70, on Thursday afternoon in Mountain Top.

Scanlon won the Long Jump with a leap of 14.5, and the High Jump with a jump of 4’8. She also added a second-place finish in the Triple Jump.

Lanza won both hurdles events, taking the 110m in 17.3 and the 300m in 51.4.

Danielle Oliveri added a win in the Triple Jump for PA, and finished second in the Long Jump.

Samantha Horchos won the Pole Vault for the Lady Patriots, and Bianca Bolton won the Javelin. The PA 3200, Relay team also grabbed a victory.

Shelby Shimkoski finished second in both the Shot Put and Discus for PA, and Catherine Lombardo placed second in both the 8o0m and 1600m races.

PA 74, Valley West 75

Pittston Area won six events, and finished second in 11 events, but it was not enough in a 75-74 loss to Valley West on Tuesday in Plymouth.

Catherine Lombardo placed first in two events for the Lady Patriots, taking the 800m and 1600m long distance runs. The sophomore won the 1600 in a time of 5:28, and captured the 800 in a time of 2:38.

Olivia Lanza won the 300m Hurdles for PA in a time of 51.8. The sophomore also finished second in the 110m Hurdles.

Freshman Alyssa Talerico added a win in the Javelin with a throw of 100’7 for the Lady Patriots, and also finished second in the Discus. The PA 1600 and 3200 relays teams also both notched victories.

Rachel Scanlon finished second in both the High Jump and Long Jump, and placed third in the Triple Jump for Pittston Area.
